Welcome back, Mighty Warriors! Get ready to step into the next part of our adventure: Love That Saves. Today we're learning why Jesus chose the cross, what mercy and grace really mean, and why His love rescues us in a way nothing else can. Are you ready? Let's jump in!
The rain had just stopped outside, leaving little droplets sliding down the clubhouse window like tiny race cars. Inside, Ayden, Max, and Kylie sat at a round wooden table. Max was quietly building a little tower with wooden blocks, and Kylie was drawing hearts on her notebook, but both of them kept glancing at Ayden.
Finally, Kylie leaned in.
"Ayden… you've been pretty quiet ever since Trade Day. What's going on?"
Ayden sighed and tapped his fingers on the table.
"I just don't get it. Why would Jesus do that for me? Why would He trade His perfect life for my messed-up one?"
Max froze with the block in his hand and sat up straighter.
"That is a huge question."
Ayden's voice shook a little.
"I mean… I know Jesus loves people. But why the cross? Why something that big… for me?"
Kylie reached toward the little whiteboard leaning against the bookshelf.
"Let's talk it through. That question matters."
Max nodded. "Yeah. Let's figure it out together."
Kylie grabbed a marker and wrote two big words: Grace and Mercy
Ayden blinked. "Those sound like complicated church words."
"They do," Max said, "but they're actually pretty simple."
Kylie pointed to the first word.
"Mercy means God doesn't give us the punishment we deserve."
Max nodded.
"Like when I got mud all over my mom's rug and she just laughed instead of getting mad."
Kylie smiled.
"Exactly, Max. Mercy is God saying, 'I've forgiven you, and He doesn't give you the punishment you deserve.'"
Then she tapped the second word.
"Grace means God gives us good things we don't deserve."
Ayden tilted his head.
"Like… presents?"
"Exactly!" Kylie laughed. "Except the blessings God gives us are even better, and we could never earn them."
Max leaned forward.
"Grace gives us forgiveness, a fresh start, and a place in God's family."
Ayden repeated slowly,
"So mercy means we don't get the punishment we deserve because of sin… and grace means we get good things we don't deserve and could never earn."
"You got it," Kylie said.
But Ayden still looked troubled.
"Okay… but if God can do anything, why did Jesus choose the cross? Couldn't He save us another way?"
The clubhouse fell quiet.
Kylie wiped the board clean and wrote three new words: Love that Saves
"Jesus didn't go to the cross because He had to," she said softly.
"He went because He chose to and wanted us close again, like Adam and Eve in the garden before they ate the fruit."
Max nodded.
"Sin makes a wall between us and God. A wall we can't break."
Ayden said, "I remember Mr. Jensen telling us that sin is missing the mark."
"Yeah. Like trying to hit a target right in the middle, but never making it," Max said gently.
"But God didn't want us separated from Him. Jesus took the punishment so we can be made new."
Kylie sat back, the marker still in her hand.
"That's right. Jesus stepped in. He took the punishment we deserved because of sin...that's mercy.
And He gave us new life, something we didn't deserve or earn...that's grace."
Ayden stared at the words on the board again.
"So the cross shows both?"
"Both," Kylie said.
"And both come from love."
Max added, "And it didn't stop there, Ayden. They put Jesus in a tomb, and on the third day, God raised Him from the dead!"
Max grabbed a Bible and flipped to the Mighty Memory Verse they had been practicing.
"Look," he said, pointing. "John 3:16. God loved the world so much He gave Jesus."
Then Max read it aloud, slowly and clearly:
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." That's in John chapter 3 verse 16.
Kylie added softly,
"And 'the world' includes you. God planned your rescue before you were even born."
Ayden looked down at his hands.
"So Jesus chose the cross because… I matter to Him."
"You matter more than you know," Kylie whispered.
Max smiled wide. "God's love rescues."
Ayden took a deep breath. His shoulders relaxed.
"So that means… love saved me."
Kylie nodded.
"Exactly."
Max grinned.
"And now you're starting to understand what it means to be made new."
Ayden smiled for the first time that afternoon and quietly said to himself,
"Wow… Love that Saves."

He formed me with His hands
And He’s still shaping me
Even when I cannot see
What He is doing in my life
I can trust the Master Potter
Because His thoughts are always right
Chorus
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you
Says the Lord says the Lord
Thoughts of peace and not of evil
To give you a future and a hope

Says the Lord says the Lord
Thoughts of peace and not of evil
To give you a future and a hope
Verse 2

He is working out His purpose
And He already knows
